Since 1971, students and faculty in the building and construction programs at North Platte Community College have built a top-quality, three-bedroom house as part of the "hands-on" aspect of their training. This year, under the direction of NPCC Building Construction Instructor Jack Daniels, the house has more special features and upgrades than ever. 

The exterior of the home features a gabled look with different elevations that reflects a ontemporary concept. The front of the house sports a leaded glass front door with a sidelight window and a large bay window. Hardie Plank Board siding covers the exterior of the home.

"The siding is a lifetime product," Daniels said. "We kept the metal trim and facia because it's very durable and with the weather being a constant factor in Nebraska, durability is important." He added that the Heritage Asphalt shingles on the roof have a 30-year warranty.

The home was built with two-by-sixes in the exterior walls rather than two-by-fours to increase the R-Value (efficiency of insulation) in the walls. The bathroom walls also received additional insulation to help separate sound from adjacent living areas.

According to Daniels, the nearly 1,600 square foot home makes good use of virtually every inch of space. The specially designed floor plan features large rooms and plenty of storage space, including walk-in closets in the master bedroom as well as one of the guest rooms.

Approximately one third of the house is dedicated to the master bedroom and bath, which is separated from the guest bedrooms by the living area. Some of the features of the spacious master suite include double walk-in closets, a whirlpool tub, a walk-in shower, his and hers sinks, and linen storage space. Another third of the house is dedicated to two guest bedrooms and bath area. The remaining square footage is dedicated to the kitchen, dining room and living room areas.

The kitchen area has an open and airy feel thanks to a large pass-through window in the partial wall that divides it from the main living area. Special features in the expansive kitchen include ample cupboard space, a down-draft oven, double Lazy Susans, Corian countertops, tiled and floors.

The dining and living areas come together under cathedral ceilings.  Sliding glass doors off the dining room bring plenty of natural light into the home. Recessed lighting is used generously throughout the home.  

The floor plan also includes a dedicated utility room, rear entry garage access, and an area that can be converted into a stairway should the purchaser choose to put in a basement. Solid oak trim is used extensively throughout the house.

Although construction of the house is still in progress, interested individuals can stop by the northwest corner of the North Campus (Technical Campus), 1101 Halligan Dr. in North Platte, to view it during regular campus hours.

The house will be sold by sealed bid, with a minimum bid of $90,000 required. Bidding opens on Friday, May 23. All bids must be in sealed envelopes and addressed as follows:

Bids will be accepted by mail or may be delivered in person. No faxes will be accepted. Bids will be accepted until 12 noon on Thursday, June 5. At that time, the bids will be opened and the home will go to the highest bidder. The house must be off location by Friday, August 1, 2008.
