"Filling Our Buckets for Kids" Early Childhood Conference set for Sept. 19 at NPCC

 "Filling Our Buckets for Kids" will be the theme of the annual Early Childhood Conference for providers, parents, and educators at North Platte Community College on Saturday, Sept. 19. The conference will meet from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the South Campus of the college.

 The conference will feature two keynote sessions and 16 individual sessions. Participants will receive six in-service hours that have been approved by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

The conference will begin with a keynote address by Family Consultant and Child and Family therapist, Carrie Gottschalk. The keynote topic, "Addressing Challenging Behaviors in Young Children," will feature information about common discipline mistakes and methods that promote cooperative behavior. The techniques and strategies that will be covered are practical and useful for children from toddlers to teens. 

Breakout sessions will include: Children and Food Preferences; Just Look at What Infants Can Do; Music Makes Learning Fun; Stepping Stones to Communication; Multiage Activities; What Letters You Get; Reading to Make Stories Come Alive; Toddler and Pre-School Explorations; Let's Get Ready for Kindergarten; Kids in Motion; Holiday Crafts Throughout the Year; and The Power of Breakfast.

A closing session will be presented by Susan Kotas and will feature information from a newly released book, "How Full is Your Bucket for Kids."

"Business Supervisory Series-Intermediate Modules." Pre-registrations must be made at least ten days in advance of each module. The series targets topics pertinent to today's supervisors, such as managing complaints, resolving conflicts, developing skills to motivate and guide employees to success; utilizing behavior modeling techniques; and is comprised of the following:

 "Digital Camera Basics" will be held Wednesdays, Sept. 2, 9, 16, and 23 from 7 - 9 p.m. in McMillen Hall, Room 213 with Tor Olson as the instructor. Learn how to use your digital camera or what to look for when updating or purchasing a new one.

"Excel" will be held Thursdays, Sept. 3, 10, 17, and 24 from 7 - 9 p.m. with Carrie Johnson as the instructor. This hybrid webinar class can be taken on campus in McMillen Hall, Room 201 or if the student has computer knowledge and experience, the webinar can be accessed from home, office, or wherever - after you've preregistered to receive the computer prompt for the phone number that will generate a call back telephone connection to the Webinar class. The class is not intended nor recommended for beginning computer users. You must have a computer with internet access and a hands-free or speakerphone phone (cell phones will work).

"Beginner Ballet & Tumbling Dance Class for 5-6 year olds" will be held on Tuesdays, Sept. 8-Nov. 10 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in McMillen Hall, Room 213 with Robin Marks as the instructor. Students will spend 30 minutes on each and need to wear leotard or loose fitting clothing with socks or ballet shoes.

"Beginner Teen Jazz/Hip Hop" will be held on Tuesdays, Sept. 8-Nov. 10 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in McMillen Hall, Room 213 with Robin Marks as the instructor. This is a high energy beginner dance class to today's hip-hop music. Students need to wear loose fitting clothing and socks.

"Adult Beginner Belly Dance" will be held on Tuesdays, Sept. 8-Nov. 10 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in McMillen Hall, Room 213 with Robin Marks as the instructor. This great fun and exercise class will consist of learning the basic movements of Egyptian style belly dance. A short routine will be learned during the course of ten weeks.  Participants need to be in good health and wear loose fitting clothes - stomachs do not have to show and weight is not an issue!

"Adult Experienced Belly Dance" will be held on Tuesdays, Sept. 8-Nov. 10 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in McMillen Hall, Room 213 with Robin Marks as the instructor for those who've been previous students. This great fun and exercise class will consist of learning the basic movements of Egyptian style belly dance. A short routine will be learned during the course of ten weeks. Participants need to be in good health and wear loose fitting clothes - stomachs do not have to show and weight is not an issue!  Note: If class doesn't receive sufficient registrations, another teen dance class might be formed.

"Alive at 25 - Defensive Driving Course" will be held every odd numbered month on Wednesdays from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. in McMillen Hall, Room 201 with Carol Stensvad as the instructor. The next class will be Sept. 9. This young driver intervention program zeroes in on drivers between the ages of 16 and 24  the group most likely to be involved in fatal collisions. This highly interactive four-hour program teaches young drivers how to take control of situations by taking responsibility for their own driving behavior. "N-TOP - Defensive Driving Course" is held quarterly on a quarterly basis. The next session will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. in Hormel Center for Business and Technology in McMillen Hall, Room 201 with Carol Stensvad as the instructor. It is the intention of the National Traffic Safety Institute and the referring court that attendance at this "Driving While Driver's License is Suspended/Revoked and Driving Under the Influence Support Seminar" will assist participant in examining their current driving behaviors and help in rededicating them to being a safer, responsible driver.  For additional information and registration, contact Traffic Safety Plus at (402) 466-0033 or www.trafficsafetyplus.org.

"Chair Yoga" will be held Mondays, Sept. 14-Nov. 30 from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at the Culbertson Rescue Building in Culbertson with Judea Loibl, as the instructor. Get fit while sitting in a chair or using it for additional balance. This class is gentle for beginners, baby boomers and seniors. Gain flexibility and strength while you learn breathing and relaxation techniques to bring the body, mind and spirit together.

REVISED: "Quilting Class" will be offered on Monday, Tuesday, OR Thursday in Walsh Brady Hall, Room 116 beginning Sept. 14 and 15 from 6 - 9 p.m. with Janet Bamesberger as the instructor.  Looking for a hobby during the winter months to create a family heirloom?  A picture of the quilt, diagram and supply list are available.

 "Supporting People with Intellectual Disabilities Through Illness, Grief and Loss" a Webinar Program that will be held Tuesday, Sept. 15 from noon - 1 p.m. When the topic of diversity is considered, many think of ethnicity, gender, or religious affiliation.  Yet there are other cultures that may greatly influence how one copes with, and is supported through illness, death and grief.  Dr. Claire Lavin, PhD, will share her experience about some of the challenges that all caregivers face, and the need for more education and partnership to better serve this population. One hour of CE is available for social workers, nurses and counselors. "Wine Tasting 101" will be held on Tuesdays, Sept. 15 and 22, from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. at Schmick's Market, 212 Westview Plaza, McCook, with Monica Conroy as the instructor. Back by popular demand! Take the hassle and questions out of serving wine by learning the basics of wine tasting. This two-part class will cover the making of wine, wine basics and concludes with white wine tasting during the first session. The second session will feature wine pairing and labeling and concludes with red wine and dessert wine tasting. Students must bring own wine glass & pen.

"Knitting-Intermediate" will be held on Thursdays, Sept. 17 - Oct. 22, from 6 - 8 p.m. in McMillen Hall, Room 206 with Jody Shike as the instructor. Learn to knit comfortable socks!  If you haven't knitted for a long time and just need a refresher, bring your yarn and needles and knit with us!

"STOP Program - Defensive Driving Course" will alternate months between Red Willow and Hitchcock County with Carol Stensvad as the instructor and held on Saturdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. with upcoming classes at the Hitchcock County Courthouse, Community Room on Sept. 19 and at MCC-McMillen Hall, Room 201 on Oct. 17. This defensive driving course by the National Traffic Safety Institute has proven that graduates of the program experience lower rates of traffic collisions and receive fewer citations by correcting bad driving habits that you've developed over time, recognize the role that attitude plays in driving, have a better understanding of road and driving laws, and learn the importance of being a defensive driver. Hunter Safety will be held Sept. 21, 22, 28, 29 and Oct. 5 and 6, from 6 - 8:30 p.m. in McMillen Hall, Room 213 with Dee Traphagan as the instructor. Nebraska State Law requires anyone 12 years of age or older, born on or after January 1, 1977, to have successfully completed a Firearm Hunter Education course prior to hunting. There is no maximum age limit for students and is provided at no cost. Students successfully completing this course will have a better understanding of their outdoor obligations to the landowner, to the resources, to other hunters and to themselves.

"Yoga for a Good Night's Sleep" will be held Mondays, Sept. 28-Nov. 16 from 7 - 9 p.m. in McMillen Hall, Room 201 with Gerri Jordine as the instructor. Explore yoga postures, breathing techniques and simple lifestyle practices designed to prepare for sleep by calming the mind and soothing the body.  Includes: creating a restful atmosphere, guided meditations for sleep and relaxation, and a series of yoga postures to help you relax before bed.  A gentle class suitable for adults at all levels.

 "Beginning Yoga" will be held Thursdays, Oct. 1-Nov. 19 from 6 - 7:15 p.m. in McMillen Hall, Room 201 with Gerri Jordine as the instructor. A basics class for students new to Yoga and for beginners who wish to renew and continue their practice. Classes cover introductory information, a developmental warm-up series, basic yoga postures, basic breathing techniques, guided relaxation and variations and modifications to suit the individual. Postures include seated, supine, standing and fundamental flow series. 

"PowerPoint" will be held Thursdays, Oct. 8, 15, 22, and 29 from 7 - 9 p.m. with Carrie Johnson as the instructor.  This hybrid webinar class can be taken on campus in McMillen Hall, Room 201 or if the student has computer knowledge and experience, the webinar can be accessed from home, office, or wherever - after youve preregistered to receive the computer prompt for the phone number that will generate a call back telephone connection to the Webinar class.  Generational Issues is being proposed for the latter part of October with John Mulvaney, motivational speaker from Lincoln. Mulvaney will discuss generational issues and the effects on the workplace; e.g., supervisors of one generation understanding and working with employees from another generation and the problems and stress that occurs especially now that the baby boomers are retiring in record numbers. Let us know this week if you as an individual or as part of your business would be interested in attending.

"Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving - ADD - Defensive Driving Course" is held quarterly on the second Saturday of the month.  The next session will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. in Hormel Center for Business and Technology in McMillen Hall, Room 201 with Carol Stensvad as the instructor. ADD impresses the participant to choose responsibility to improve self-work/self-esteem and to maintain personal and financial power through the use of good choices.
