MPCC offers course in archaeology

A new class offered by Mid-Plains Community College will have students delving into the past.

HUMS 2990: Intro to Archaeology will provide an understanding of the practices and techniques of archaeology. It will be taught by Shannon Dickey, who has a master's degree in the subject.

"It will be a pretty comprehensive course," said Dickey. "We will be studying a number of different archaeological sites from all over the world as well as a variety of time periods. Students will gain a new appreciation for history and for how our material culture helps us learn about that history."

Dickey said students will also learn about the terminology, scientific techniques and interpretation methods archaeologists use in the field.

"I love archaeology and like to get other people interested in it, too," said Dickey. "This will be a really fun class."

Intro to Archaeology is an elective offered online. Dickey will provide the study materials, so no books will be required.

The three credit hour class starts Aug. 21 and continues through Dec. 15. Those interested in registering can call (800) 658-4308.
