NPCC music department lets people try before they commit

NPCC is giving the public a chance to try out the music programs it offers without having to commit to them. The invitation is good for the first week of classes only.

Starting Monday, students and community members can try out the music programs at North Platte Community College - no strings attached.

"It's kind of a 'try before you buy' deal," said Elizabeth Peters, NPCC music instructor. "No commitment is required. We just want people to see what the NPCC music program has to offer. It's an open invitation for people to sit in on our classes so they can decide if they would like to participate in them."

The invitation is good for the first week of classes only. Those who are interested can choose to attend any of the following classes in Room 115 of the McDonald-Belton Building on NPCC's South Campus:

  • Concert Choir – noon to 1:15 p.m. Monday and Wednesday
  • Jazz Band – 1:15-2:15 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday
  • Select Choir – 12:15-1 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday
  • Chamber Ensemble – 1:30-2:20 p.m. Monday
  • Group Piano – 1-1:50 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday
  • Group Vocal – 1:30-2:20 p.m. Wednesday
  • Group Guitar – 2:30-3:20 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday

"Anyone can come and sing, or if they have an instrument, they can play it," said Peters. "We will talk about what we do and what's coming up this semester. Participants can meet each other, and we will go through new music."

Select instruments, such as guitars, can be checked out from the music department for free.

"The neat thing about the piano, vocal and guitar classes is that individual singing and playing is done in a group setting, which takes the pressure off," said Peters. "The benefits to being in the ensembles are that students get to be creative, make wonderful music, and by working together, develop a family-type bond. It's always a positive experience."

There are no auditions for concert choir or jazz band – anyone can sign up, regardless of their music experience.

There are auditions for select choir and chamber ensemble, classes typically reserved for those who want to do more performing. Tryouts for both will be in Room 115 of the McDonald-Belton Building.

The auditions for chamber ensemble will begin at 1:30 p.m. Monday, and those for select choir will start at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

More information about auditions and the music program at NPCC is available by calling Peters at 535-3755.
