Thirty-three adjunct faculty members with a combined total of 310 years' worth of service have been recognized by Mid-Plains Community College.

"The college offers courses at all times and days during the semester, and to make a lot of that happen, we rely on adjunct faculty to teach a number of classes for us," said Dr. Jody Tomanek, area vice-president of academic affairs and North Platte Community College. "Without them, we would have a difficult time offering the variety of classes that we do.

Since July, Tomanek and her staff have presented five-year increment certificates to adjunct faculty at all of the college's campus locations: McCook, North Platte, Broken Bow, Imperial, Ogallala and Valentine. That final recognition ceremony was Thursday evening.

Those recognized for serving the longest were:

  • 30 years - Steve Clapp, McCook, art instructor
  • 25 years - Mark Harwood, North Platte, auto body instructor
  • 20 years - Kris Walker, North Platte, speech instructor

MPCC currently has more than 200 adjunct instructors. Of those, about 15 are employed by the college in an additional role.

"We have a number of adjunct faculty who are dual credit faculty and teach college courses in the high schools on our behalf," said Tomanek. "This is a way to recognize all of the individuals who give up their personal time to teach in an adjunct capacity for us."
