NPCC to host “A Christmas to Remember”

Carmen Allen's song, "In Bethlehem," will be featured during a holiday concert Dec. 8 at North Platte Community College. The concert is free and open to the public.

A time, a place, a friend – there's no disputing the fact that songs have a way of evoking memories.

The North Platte Community College Music Department will do its part to recall feelings of warmth, happiness and love in all who attend a holiday concert Dec. 8.

"A Christmas to Remember" will begin at 7 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on NPCC's South Campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

The college's music ensembles will perform a variety of selections intended to leave audience members feeling uplifted and excited about the holiday season.

Traditional hymns such as, "Away in a Manger" and "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," will be intertwined with modern day hits such as the Pentatonix version of "White Winter Hymnal" and "Snow," from the musical, "White Christmas."

The highlight of the show will be a select choir performance of, "In Bethlehem," written by NPCC music instructor Carmen Allen. She initially created the piece for an a cappella group she conducted in Northeast Pennsylvania.

"I have been to Bethlehem a couple of times, and the quietness of it and the rural atmosphere just really impressed me," said Allen. "So, as I was contemplating the Christmas story, I was thinking about what it must have been like to have such a major event happen in that peaceful little town. I tried to capture the feeling in my song."

Allen will also direct the chamber ensemble, while Ron Daly will direct the jazz band and Elizabeth Peters will direct the concert and select choirs.

"The collaboration and musicianship seen in each of the ensembles is outstanding," said Peters. "It amazes me to see how far these students have come as we bring our semester to a close."
