Softball team targets cancer

The North Platte Community College Knights Softball Team is taking a stand against cancer. The goal is to have a "grey out" at the team's home game against McCook Community College on April 18.

To accomplish that, the team is selling grey t-shirts with the words, "Beat Cancer," on them next to an image of the NPCC Knights' mascot.

"We've promoted cancer awareness at games before, but this is the first time we've ordered shirts," said Coach Janelle Higgins. "We're doing this in honor of Ian Galloway, a little boy here in North Platte who has been battling cancer. He's been our adopted player the last four years."

Proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to benefit Beat Cancer Today's mission is to create awareness of childhood cancers and to provide financial support for childhood cancer research and patient and family support programs.

Shirts must be pre-ordered by Saturday to guarantee buyers receive the correct size. They can be purchased online at The team will also take orders at its home game Saturday against Central Community College.

"We will order some extras that will be available for purchase after the pre-order cut-off, but they will be random sizes," said Higgins.

The cost of shirt sizes small to extra large is $15. The cost is $17.50 for sizes 2XL and 3XL. Buyers will be notified when their shirts are delivered. They will be available for pick up from Higgins.
