Compass
WHAT IS COMPASS?
COMPASS is a computer based-adaptive placement test that measures skills in reading, writing and mathematics.
COMPASS helps determine your placement in college courses. There is very little pressure as there is no time limit. The computer selects questions for you on the basis of your answers to previous questions.
COMPASS is “user friendly,” so no experience with computers is needed.
WHY TAKE THE PLACEMENT TESTS?
Research shows that when students enter courses at the proper level, they will become more successful in college and stay in school longer. Placement tests measure your current skill level in math, writing and reading so you can register for the appropriate math, English, or reading course(s) at MPCC, giving your academic career a boost!
CAN I FAIL THE COMPASS TEST?
NO! You cannot fail. The test is designed to help you and the college determine whether you are ready to immediately start the program you have chosen or need some additional preparation first.
HOW SOON WILL I KNOW MY SCORES?
Instantly! Your score report prints out as soon as you are finished with the test. This way you’ll know if meet cut scores for certain programs and can go straight to your advising appointment all ready to sign up for classes!!!
WHEN SHOULD I SCHEDULE THE COMPASS TESTING?
Right away. If you are notified of the need to complete COMPASS placement testing, don’t delay. It is also recommended that you plan well in advance for financial aid, veterans’ assistance, services for students with disabilities, housing, and other requirements.
WHEN IS COMPASS OFFERED, AND HOW DO I SIGN UP?
A variety of times are available to take the COMPASS. Please call the campus of your choice to arrange a testing time that fits your schedule. Every student’s situation and future plans are different, so arrangements for COMPASS testing should be made well in advance of the beginning of your program.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO THE TEST?
Know or bring your social security number with you. Other than that, nothing! We provide scratch paper and calculators for you to use.
HOW LONG DOES THE TEST TAKE?
Please allow about 1 1/2 hours for your COMPASS test. It is self-paced so it may take you a little shorter or longer time period to complete it. 1.5 hours is an approximate average.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The first time you take the test it is free. Should you need to take it again, it is $5 for each segment. For example: if you’d like to take the Math portion only, it’s just $5; but if you want to take the whole test again, it will cost $15. There is no limit to how many times you take the test, but it will cost each time after the first.
