“The Nebraska Business Development Center is a natural fit for our college,” said Angela Raby, Area Director of the Center for Enterprise. “Community colleges are intrinsically linked to development in rural areas. As rural economies seek diversity, in a highly dynamic and globally competitive environment, the success of our small and mid-sized businesses will play a central role in the success of our region’s long-term sustainability.”
In late 2013, Charlie McPherson of McCook was selected as the Area NBDC Coordinator. He immediately began seeking ways to accomplish NBDC’s Mission of “Helping Good Businesses Become Better.”
“Given the potential and opportunities with this partnership, I believe it could have an exponential impact to the area and communities we live in, providing growth, sustainability, and an economic impact to this region,” he said. “The NBDC office at Mid-Plains Community College is here to assist with one-on-one business consulting, business planning, loan packaging and will connect you to the business classes that best suit your needs. By helping build and grow successful businesses, NBDC contributes to Nebraska’s high quality of life.”
McPherson noted that NBDC’s Small Business Development Center provides direct management and technical assistance to more than 2,000 businesses in Nebraska every year. In addition to consulting and educational services for small and mid-sized businesses, NBDC assists by building a three-year financial forecast, basic market research, and helps Nebraska businesses grow and create new jobs. Many services are free to the business owner or entrepreneur, and all are confidential and impartial.
“Although our main office will be housed in North Platte, we will provide service and support to MPCC’s entire 18-county service area including McCook Community College and our Extended Campus sites in Broken Bow, Ogallala, Imperial and Valentine,” he said.
“We are excited to partner with the NBDC and other contributors in this endeavor,” said MPCC President Ryan Purdy. “The CFE continues to grow in numbers and programs offered to our constituents. The addition of Charlie and the services provided by NBDC are extremely valuable to the economic development and sustainability of our 18-county region. This arrangement will allow this new NBDC office the ability to provide better service to our local entrepreneurs and existing business owners.”
