MPCC Rodeo Scholarship created in honor of Erika Schmidt

A new endowed scholarship providing $1,000 annually has been established for a Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team sophomore.

The Erika Schmidt Memorial Sparkle Scholarship will be awarded to an eligible full-time student athlete who “sparkles” and exemplifies the qualities that Schmidt displayed throughout her time supporting the MPCC rodeo program; professionalism, go-getter spirit, encouraging, patient, supportive, building confidence, joy and generosity.

“Erika poured her heart into our students and our rodeo program,” said MPCC Vice President of Administrative Services Mike Steele. “This scholarship ensures her spirit and encouragement will continue supporting student-athletes long into the future.”

The scholarship is funded by family, friends and supporters of the MPCC Rodeo Team in memory of Schmidt’s lasting impact on the program.

About Schmidt:

Erika Schmidt (July 30, 1973 – Dec. 11, 2025) was more than the heart of the MPCC Administrative Services department - she was the driving force behind the MPCC Rodeo Team.

 With her boundless energy, keen eye for detail and relentless determination, Erika helped make the MPCC Stampede and fundraising banquets a success, earning the prestigious Rodeo of the Year honor multiple years in a row.

From securing vendors and filling seats to orchestrating flawless auctions and successful raffles, Erika’s go-getter spirit ensured every event ran smoothly.

She worked closely with students, making sure they were properly outfitted in their vests and jackets and assisting with requisitions, always with patience, attention and encouragement. Her dedication went beyond logistics - she lifted spirits, built confidence and made everyone feel valued.

Erika’s love for the MPCC Rodeo Team, her colleagues and her community was evident in everything she did. She leaves behind a legacy of generosity, professionalism and joy that will continue to inspire the MPCC family for years to come.
