North Platte Community College student Susan Shepard will perform her Sophomore Recital April 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd.

The recital is a requirement to receive an Associate of Fine Arts – Music. Shepard will sing 15 songs studied over the past two years, spanning classical repertoire, jazz, pop and Broadway selections.

Shepard studies under James Meny, an MPCC adjunct vocal instructor and collaborates closely with accompanist Carolyn Cline, who also serves as her piano instructor. The recital has required extensive preparation, including memorization, language study and stage movement.

The recital is free and open to the public. All are welcome following the performance to a reception in the fireplace area.

About Shepard

A North Platte resident since 2021, Shepard began her studies at Mid-Plains in fall 2024 and is set to graduate in May with an Associate of Fine Arts in music with an emphasis in vocal performance.

A wife and mother of four, Shepard returned to school after more than a decade away from higher education due to frequent moves as part of her husband’s military career. She said Mid-Plains offered the opportunity she had long been seeking and learning about the MPCC music program was like a dream come true.

“I was trained classically, but my studies here have expanded my repertoire into jazz, pop and Broadway,” Shepard said. “It’s made me a much more well-rounded performer.”

Looking ahead, Shepard plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in music therapy, combining her passion for music with a desire to help others.
